VSP launching ‘Operation DISS-rupt’ across I-81

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR)—Virginia State Police across the Commonwealth will be conducting Operation DISS-rupt on all 325 miles of I-81 on Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26.

The traffic enforcement and educational safety initiative focuses on the ‘DISS’ in driving, which VSP cites as the four main causes of fatal and serious injury crashes on Virginia’s interstates:

  • Distracted Driving

  • Impaired Driving

  • Speed Compliance

  • Seat belt safety

During a similar operation in Feb., VSP reported 343 drivers were cited for speeding.

“This spring we have continued to see dangerous driving behaviors on Virginia’s highways, and our goal is to “disrupt” them,” said Lt. Col. Matt Hanley, director of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Field Operations.  “We’re working to get Virginia back to the basics of traffic safety, which includes getting motorists to slow down, share the road and drive distraction-free.”

The operation’s goal is to achieve zero fatal crashes during the two days the operation is being conducted and to reduce the total number of interstate crashes by 10%.
