Voters could decide where gas tax revenue goes

A ballot measure will allow voters to decide how money from the gas tax should be spent. Proposition 69 would require that the new transportation revenues be used only for transportation purposes. The measure is in response to the fact that transportation funds in the past have been "borrowed" by the California Legislature. Prop. 69 would put gas tax funds in a “lock box” designed for road repairs, as approved by lawmakers when they passed Senate Bill 1. Under SB 1, $54 billion is to be invested in state highways and local roads over the next 10 years. Opponents of Prop. 69 said lawmakers have broken promises in the past and this measure will not fix or build any new roads.
