Voters approve Port Huron Schools ballot proposal

According to the unofficial May 7 special election results, the Port Huron Area Schools sinking fund tax proposal was narrowly approved by voters.

Voters approved the building and site sinking fund with a total of 3,880 in favor votes and 3,613 no votes.

The 10-year, 1 mill sinking fund is estimated to generate $2.2 million each year.

Prior to the election, the school district estimated the May levy at 2.62 mills. With approval from voters, the district will increase to 3.62 mills.

Money generated from the sinking fund can only be used for things such as building repairs and maintenance, technology, transportation and other necessary upgrades within the district.

"On behalf of our students, staff and the Board of Education, Port Huron Schools is incredibly grateful to the community for your support for unofficially passing the Sinking Fund," said Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas. "Your commitment to our students and public schools is truly appreciated. Your investment in our schools will allow us to continue providing quality education in safe and innovative classrooms for years to come. Thank you to the community, especially during Teacher Appreciation Week."

The school district approved the language for the proposal in January.
