Vote for Midlands high school boys spring sports Athlete of the Week: March 25

It’s time to vote for The State’s boys spring sports Athlete of the Week from Midlands-area high schools and games played March 18-23. Voting ends Friday at noon. The winner will be announced on Lou Bezjak’s Twitter page.

Coaches can nominate a player each week by emailing Lou Bezjak at lbezjak@thestate.com by noon on Mondays.

The nominees are listed below. Please note that these polls are not scientific and are meant to be just for fun

Boys Athlete of Week Nominees

Thatcher Baughman, Ben Lippen baseball: Senior gave up one earned run and struck out eight in 5-2 win over Hammond.

Mason Burdette, Irmo baseball: Senior struck out 13, allowed one run on one hit in six innings of work.

Brandon Cromer, Lexington baseball: Junior pitched a complete-game, one-hitter on 87 pitches in win over Chapin. Cromer walked one and struck out seven.

Brady Furniss, Camden baseball: Freshman 5-for-7 with four RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored in two games.

Miller Harrelson, Airport baseball: Senior was 4-for-10 with four RBIs. On the mound, Harrellson allowed two hits and struck out nine in 6.2 innings.

AJ Jefferson, Lugoff-Elgin baseball: Sophomore was 4-for-5 with a grand slam, double, five RBIs and five runs scored.

Noah Mitchell, Gray Collegiate soccer: Junior had a goal in Gray’s win over Dreher. He also had two goals and an assist to help the War Eagles win the Smoky Mountain Cup in Tennessee a few days before.

Denzell Posey, White Knoll baseball: Freshman pitched five scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out four. At the plate, he was 4-for-10 with an RBI.

Sid Shaw, Saluda baseball: Sophomore hit .500 with seven RBIs for the Tigers this week.

Gerardo Vera, White Knoll soccer: Senior forward scored four goals and had one assist against Denmark-Olar.

Nygel Woodard, Fairfield Central baseball: Sophomore was 5-for-6 with five runs scored and three RBIs.

Kendall Wright, Swansea baseball: Eighth grader hit . 444 and also allowed one earned run over six innings pitched with eighth strikeouts in two relief appearances this week.
