Vonn lets her skiing do the talking after Donald Trump controversy

Lindsey Vonn shrugged off the social media storm surrounding her views on Donald Trump to claim glory in the super-G at Val d'Isere.

Earlier this week, Vonn revealed she had received messages willing her to "break her neck" after criticising the US president in an interview, stating she would not accept an invitation to the White House.

The American was back on more familiar territory on Saturday, recording the fastest time - at one minute and 4.86 seconds - to claim a 78th FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup triumph and a first since January.

"I guess I'm not a washed-up old hag," said Vonn, who was returning from a back injury and became the second oldest woman to win a World Cup super-G meeting. 

"I think I proved myself, and karma definitely comes back around. I've got some good karma coming my way.

"I think I skied well. The terrain was really bumpy and I almost fell at the end. I'm really happy to have had a race today."

Vonn's effort was enough to see off the challenge of second-placed Sofia Goggia (+0.31secs) while Ragnhild Mowinckel (+0.39) rounded out the top three.

Defending super-G champion and standings leader Tina Weirather crashed out, while world gold medallist Nicole Schmidhofer was fourth (+0.67).

Meanwhile, in Val Gardena, Aksel Lund Svindal made it back-to-back downhill victories with a time of 1:57.00.

The Norwegian moved to the top of the standings having prevailed over compatriot and close friend Kjetil Jansrud (+0.59) with Max Franz a further 0.26secs back.
