Is a Volvo station wagon even a Volvo station wagon without a lifted Cross Country version? The Volvo V60 is getting the familiar rugged treatment as it enters its new generation; the formula remains the same as the many Cross Country wagons that came before it, and that, in this case, is a very good thing.

The visual modifications include plenty of extra black cladding along the side sills and around the wheel wells, plus different front and rear fascias. It's also lifted compared with the regular V60, and Volvo touts that the new V60 CC's ground clearance is around three inches higher than its predecessor. It also has off-road-focused features to complement its standard all-wheel-drive system, such as hill-descent control and an Off-Road driving mode-so it can back up its appearance with a bit of extra capability.

While the standard V60 is available in 250-hp T5 and 316-hp T6 variants, only one powertrain option will be offered for the U.S.-bound V60 Cross Country initially: a T5 AWD model with the 250-hp version of Volvo's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Volvo does say that it will eventually offer hybrid versions of the V60 CC, including a plug-in hybrid, but we don't know when those will arrive on our shores.

Aside from its more elevated seating position, the V60 Cross Country's interior doesn't look different from the standard V60's, although Volvo may offer different trim or upholstery choices. It comes standard with the same Sensus touchscreen infotainment system found elsewhere in the lineup and also boasts lots of standard active-safety features.

There's no word yet on pricing for the 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country-or for the standard V60 wagon, for that matter-but we can expect the Cross Country model to command a slight premium. It will also be offered as part of Volvo's Care by Volvo subscription service when it arrives in the States sometime next year.
