Volunteer High School receives new kiln for art room, announces silent auction

CHURCH HILL, Tenn. (WJHL) – Volunteer High School (VHS) is celebrating the addition of its new kiln after months of collaboration and fundraising, said VHS teacher Gary Hensley.

After the old kiln stopped working, Hensley and his classes teamed up with another class to raise money for a new one in the art room. Hensley said that the students organized an Earth Day Jam in the school’s courtyard, painted shoes and held a bake sale to raise funds.

Hensley is not the art teacher at VHS, but that did not stop him from encouraging his students to take action.

“I am hoping that students who participated in this realize that if they see a need and want to make a change, they can do it if they set their mind to it,” he said.

The community is invited to a silent auction at VHS on May 17 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., featuring students’ pottery and other artwork. Those interested are also welcome to view the new kiln.

Hensley thanked the community, maintenance staff and Hawkins County Schools for the collaborative effort and donations.

First Baptist Church and Food City in Church Hill also participated in fundraising.
