Volunteer firefighter accused of setting multiple fires in Scotland County

SCOTLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) — A volunteer firefighter has been accused of setting multiple fires in Scotland County, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Hunter Chase Hatcher, 19, of Scotland County, was charged with three counts of setting fire to grasslands, woods or brush, two counts of burning of certain structures and one count of burning personal property.

Scotland County deputies were asked Wednesday by the North Carolina Forest Service’s Law Enforcement Division to investigate a structure fire on Pea Bridge Road.

While they were investigating, Hatcher, a firefighter at the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Department, was arrested.

After speaking with Hatcher, they learned he had set even more fires, authorities said. He was booked into the Scotland County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
