Volkswagen to buy back 5 lakh diesel cars in the US

Volkswagen has reportedly offered to buy back 5,00,000 diesel cars in the US. The company in September 2015 accepted that it cheated in emission tests of its vehicles.
Volkswagen attracted negative attention when its cars were found to be using the defeat device which helped them clear the emission tests. Popular ones like the Jetta, Golf and the Audi A3 sold since 2009 features the affected 2.0-litre diesel engine. About 80,000 cars, including the Audi and the Porsche SUV models, which have the 3.0-litre diesel engine that has also been emitting pollutants over the permissible limits will not be included in this offer.
The German automaker has agreed to pay a compensation amount to owners as well. In addition to the cost incurred for buying back the affected vehicles, the company compensation fund amount is expected to be valued over $ 1 billion. Once permitted by the authorities, Volkswagen might also offer repair work on the affected ones. Customers might also get a period of two years wherein they can decide if they want to get the car repaired or sell their cars back to the company.
