LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Those in Las Vegas who learned of the death of O.J. Simpson reacted to the news Thursday.

Simpson was tried and ultimately acquitted for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman in 1995. More than 150 million watched the verdict in real-time.

Dubbed the “trial of the century,” many remember where they were when the verdict came down.

“I was still in high school at the time,” said Nelson Sanchez of Washington, DC.

“I remember everything about that trial,” said Robert Bauler of Colorado, who said he was shocked to learn of Simpson’s death on Tuesday. Bauler remembered elements of the iconic trial, “Johnnie Cochran with the if the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”

“It was at the forefront of every news station that you could possibly watch,” said Lisa McApline of Washington.” It was like nothing was going on but that.”

Those from other countries tuned into the 1995 trial. Manuel Brousseau from Quebec City remembered watching the whole thing.

“When the verdict came down, I guess I was watching TV, and we also saw his white Bronco on the TV, and when he put his gloves on,” said Brousseau.

When asked about Simpson’s legacy, reactions were mixed.

“Probably a good example for other people of what not to do,” said Sanchez.

“We’re going to remember the trial, but he was a good football player before everything happened,” said Brousseau.

In 2007, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of armed robbery in Las Vegas, where he tried to steal pieces of his own sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He ultimately served nine years of a 33-year sentence.

Simpson was released in 2017 from Lovelock Correctional Center and had plans to move back to Florida, but he remained in Las Vegas until his death.
