Virginia Gov McAuliffe under investigation for campaign violations: NBC

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's campaign is under investigation for possible violations, federal officials told NBC News on Monday.

The FBI has looked into whether McAuliffe's campaign accepted illegal contributions, the two officials said. The Democratic governor was elected in 2013 and has served since 2014.

McAuliffe has not been charged with any wrongdoing. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Investigators have not notified McAuliffe about the probe, said CNN, which first reported the investigation. The governor "will certainly cooperate" with the government if he is contacted, Marc Elias, an attorney for McAuliffe's campaign, told the outlet.

NBC could not immediately confirm which contributions drew investigators' attention.
