Virginia Department of Transportation warning against fraudulent texts asking drivers to pay outstanding tolls

VIRGINIA (DC News Now) — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) warned Virginians about fraudulent text messages asking for money to pay outstanding toll charges.

VDOT said the FBI also warned against this issue which has occurred in other states as well, and does not just target E-ZPass customers.

VDOT said that the text messages claimed to represent a toll road collection service and told recipients that they owed money for unpaid tolls. They would provide links that would lead people to risk giving away their sensitive data, including credit card information.

If any Virginians receive these fraudulent texts, VDOT said not to click the link.

E-ZPass customers can check to see if they have an unpaid balance here and other toll customers can click here to check.

Anyone who has received the fraudulent texts should file a complaint with the FBI and include the phone number of the text and the link that is provided.
