Virginia Beach School Board appoints interim member; special election to be held in the fall

The Virginia Beach School Board this week appointed Shannon Kendrick to the open District 4 seat. The seat was left vacant after Staci Martin resigned last month.

Kendrick is the president of Kendrick Consulting Group and development officer for International Cooperating Ministries. She has held various roles in government and community relations, according to a school division release, including leadership roles for the U.S. Peace Corps, Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance and a local congressional district.

According to her LinkedIn account, Kendrick also served as an adjunct professor of business at ITT Technical Institute in Norfolk from 2013-16 and as an outreach administrator for the pro-Israel political action committee AIPAC in the summer of 2007. Kendrick also serves on the board of the Life Enrichment Center, a nonprofit benefiting Virginia public school students with literacy needs and is vice chair of the Virginia African American Advisory Board.

Kendrick said at a candidates forum earlier this month she is a daughter of two Air Force veterans and attended nine schools. She said she can relate with the division’s military-connected students. She also said her experience managing constituent services would help her in the role.

“I want to work with you all to establish and advance solutions that we need to maintain Virginia Beach’s position as the premier school district in the Commonwealth,” she said at that board meeting.

Kendrick has a Master of Business Administration from Regent University and a bachelor’s degree from Oral Roberts University.

A special election for District 4 will be held in November.
