Virgin Australia firms up order for 23 Boeing 737 Maxes

CHICAGO (AP) -- Boeing Co. said on Friday that Virgin Australia has finalized an order for 23 of its revamped 737s, called the Max.

Virgin Australia already flies 68 of Boeing's 737s. The new Max is a version that will get a new engine and other enhancements aimed at making it more fuel-efficient. Boeing is plans to deliver the first one in 2017, although it didn't say when Virgin Australia would get its planes.

Virgin Australia is part of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which also holds a minority stake in Virgin America.

Shares of Chicago-based Boeing fell 75 cents to $73.69 in afternoon trading.
