Viral video: 'Prometheus' TED Talk with Guy Pearce

With a leap into the future, director Ridley Scott released a video clip for his upcoming sci-fi horror film Prometheus, featuring Guy Pearce as tech industry tycoon Peter Weyland giving a TED Talk in the year 2023.

Posted on the TED blog while the actual Technology Entertainment Design conference is underway in California, the video shows Pearce addressing an arena-size crowd with his latest pronouncement.

Created by Scott and co-writer Damon Lindelof, and directed by Ridley Scott's son Luke Scott, the clip appears to be part of a viral campaign. There is also a website for Weyland Industries similar to the Iron Man campaign for Stark Industries, which may be a place for more viral activity -- https://www.weylandindustries.com.

After a three year media blackout, Weyland has emerged to describe the origin of fire and the myth of Prometheus. He then lists other significant discoveries through the ages, from the wheel and gun powder to the lightbulb and automobile, the internet, biotech and nanotech.

In 2023, he explains cybernetic individuals, leading to a conclusion that gets the audience buzzing. He ends with, "My name is Peter Weyland and if you'll indulge me, I'd like to change the world."

The film costars Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Charlize Theron (Young Adult), Idris Elba (Luther) and Michael Fassbender (Shame) as well as Pearce.

The film opens in 3D on May 30-31 in Europe and Russia and June 1 in the UK, followed by Australia, Hong Kong, Brazil, India, North America and most other markets on June 7-8.
