Villages Evacuated as Wildfire Sparks 'Environmental Disaster' on Greek Island

A large wildfire prompted evacuations from four villages and a monastery on the Greek island of Evia on August 13, local media reported.

In what was described as a “huge environmental disaster” for the island, firefighters battled the 12 kilometer blaze as the region’s roughly 500 residents were evacuated, ekathimerini.com reported.

Greece’s civil protection authority declared a state of emergency for the area affected by the fire.
