Village of Lewiston drops residency requirement for some employees

May 7—The Village of Lewiston has dropped a village residency requirement for its offices of clerk, deputy clerk, and treasurer.

Rather than needing to live in the village to hold these offices, the people serving in those positions just need to reside in Niagara County. The Village Board of Trustees approved the measure at its work session on Monday.

Treasurer Stephanie Longwell said that every year, the village passes a residency waiver for the roles, since not all the employees in question are village residents. She added this would be easier instead of doing that yearly process.

Mayor Anne Welch said that if they cannot find someone in the village to do the jobs, then they would look in the Town of Lewiston. If not there, then they would look elsewhere in the county.
