UN Headquarters Lights Up in Celebration of Diwali

The United Nations secretariat building in Manhattan was for the first time lit up to mark Diwali on October 30. “Happy Diwali” illuminated the building’s facade, along with the image of a traditional diya, or Indian oil lamp.

India’s ambassador to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin, tweeted that the building had become a popular selfie backdrop, and dozens of images quickly appeared on social media showing passersby snapping shots outside.

The building will continue to be lit until October 31. The UN General Assembly first adopted a resolution in December 2014 that acknowledged Diwali and declared it a no-meeting day. Credit: Facebook/Indian at UN (Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, New York)
