Two million dollar cheque found on Madrid metro

His name is known. He has a California driver’s licence. But where is the man who lost two million dollars on Madrid’s metro system?

While most of us carry more modest amounts on public transport, a cheque for the aforementioned astronomical sum was found at the Diego de Leon station. It was in a leather wallet, wedged into the frame of a carriage door which wouldn’t close properly.

“When we realised that the mechanism had trapped a wallet we …opened it which is the standard procedure” said metro maintenance boss Jose Manuel. “Inside the wallet, there was documentation, a driver’s licence, credit cards and a cheque for 2 million dollars which was really a surprise.”

Mislaid goods are nothing new on the metro system but the cheque, post-dated to January next year, is the jewel in Madrid’s lost property crown. It is thought the wallet may have been snatched by a thief who discarded it after failing to spot its precious contents.
