Rome vows to block funeral of Nazi war criminal Erich Priebke
Civil and church authorities in Rome have moved to prevent the funeral of Nazi war criminal Erich Priebke.
The former SS officer who was convicted of one of Italy’s worst wartime massacres, died while under house arrest in the Italian capital last week.
He was aged 100.
Leading figures claim his burial in the city would be an insult.
In March 1944, Priebke was in charge of SS troops who executed the 335 people in retaliation for the killing of 33 German soldiers by a partisan group near Rome.
