If you like movies that depict Latino culture, then the Latino Film Festival is for you. The event is underway and there are plenty of good films to see. News 8's Nathalie Basha was in El Cajon, and got to talk with some of the stars and filmmakers.
Dan: The rise of Trump is just an expression of modern day Republicanism....it's their own fault that he's the nominee. For years, the Republicans have cultivated a very specific type of political culture. They've dumbed down the political discourse....most conservative " ;opinions" on an issue generally tend to be easily remembered one-line slogans and catchphrases, endlessly repeated by the Party. You get ten liberals in a room and ask them about an issue, and you're probably going to get ten fairly different opinions on what should be done and why. You get ten conservatives in a room and ask them the same question, however, and they commonly say not only the same thing, they often use the same wording while saying it. Independent thought isn't as valued in the Republican Party as the ability to march in lockstep with whatever ideological tenet that the Party has decided to enact. Also, the Republicans have worked very hard to train their voters to ignore stuff that the voters do not wish to hear. I cannot say how many times I've presented a fact or statistic that discredited a conservative talking point, only to have the conservative simply dismiss the fact or statistic. For a lot of people on the Right, if it doesn't confirm what they already believe, it does not exist. The conservative base has been programmed to ignore scientists, academics, journalists...anyone who might tell them something that contradicts the ideology. In 2012, for example, they proclaimed the "inevitability" of Mitt Romney's victory, EVEN THOUGH THE POLLING SAID HE WAS GOING TO LOSE . In 2016, they've adopted the image of Trump as their messiah, refusing to believe even videotaped statements made by Trump that are completely opposite to the positions he's selling now. In short, the Republican Party is psychotic. Psychosis refers to a situation in which an individual has a complete disconnect from reality. The Republican Party has disconnected from reality. Trump won the Republican primary because he's a superb marketer, and he was able to comprehend the nature of the Republican Party better than anyone else in the race. He's playing to the craziness of the Republican base -perfectly
