Video: Stranded boater rescued by Coast Guard helicopter near Vermilion Bay

NEW ORLEANS (KLFY) — The Coast Guard rescued an overdue boater after his boat ran aground near Vermilion Bay, authorities said.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders were notified by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office at approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday of an overdue boater aboard a 17-foot recreational vessel last reported in the vicinity of Vermilion Bay.

Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans dispatched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a HC-144 Ocean Sentry air crew to assist in the search.

A civilian aircraft located the vessel and vectored in the helicopter crew to the boater at approximately 10 a.m., officials said. The Jayhawk air crew arrived and hoisted the boater aboard the helicopter and transported him to his vehicle at Cypremort Point.

Also searching were crews from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The boater’s name was not released. No medical concerns were reported.
