Rare white moose spotted crossing the road in Alberta, Canada: Watch video

One Alberta local recently managed to catch a special moose spotting on camera - a rare one, even for Canada.

Video captured by Theresa Tanner on Monday April 29 shows an elusive all-white moose crossing the street in rural Alberta around dusk. The moose, accompanied by one with the typical darker brown color, can be seen in the clip prancing down an embankment, out of a wooded area and down towards the otherwise empty road.

The white moose trots slowly across the roadway as its companion runs behind to catch up. The pair then meander off the road and down what appears to be a driveway or pathway and into a green area filled with tall grass.

Tanner's wife later told local media she is Cree, a North American indigenous people, and said that a white moose is a sign of good luck.

White coat is an anomaly

While some may assume the white coat is the result of some form of albinism, it's also likely its unusual color is the result of a genetic mutation. Albinism, an inherited disorder that affects melanin production, is usually accompanied by light, pinkish-colored eyes, which is difficult to determine in the clip.

According to National Geographic, the white color could also be a condition called "piebald," the result of a recessive gene causing the coat to grow in white with specks of brown. It could also be leucism, a group of conditions that can appear in animals and reduce pigmentation of the hair or fur, causing pale patches or overall pale coat color.

We can't be sure why the spotted moose sports its majestic white coat without a closer look, but we can certainly appreciate the luck of catching a rare glimpse regardless.
