Video Premiere: Surf’s Up With DJ Junkie’s ‘The Workx’

Grammy-nominated soundtrack composer-producer-DJ Junkie XL, a.k.a. Tom Holkenborg (Mad Max Fury Road, Deadpool), has returned to his analog synth roots with a gorgeous new score for a new Red Bull House Media film. Distance Between Dreams documents one of the most historic surf seasons on record as seen through the eyes of surfer Ian Walsh. Holkenborg employs analog synthesizers to create a more organic and immersive audio experience capturing the essence of riding big waves.

Yahoo Music is excited to premiere a video of a song from the score: Titled “The Workx,” the video features sweeping shots of pristine beaches and the islands they surround.

“Trying to tell Ian’s story was a tremendous learning experience for me,” said Holkenborg of the project. “Surfing is a dangerous, solitary, and very noble pursuit, and I think the majority of people are unaware of just how athletic guys like Ian are. The work he has to put in and out of the water is tremendous. The ocean is a magical place, but it’s also dangerous. Capturing Ian’s spirit and the dichotomy of his environment is what is at the heart of this score.”

Lakeshore Records will release the soundtrack in two collector’s edition double LPs on May 5. Here’s more information on Distance Between Dreams.
