At about 5:30 a.m., a FOX 8 camera showed massive flames and billowing smoke.

FOX 8 crews on the scene reported the fire was coming from burning mulch. Those in the area reported a strong odor in the air.

About an hour later, around 6:30 a.m., fire crews appeared to have the fire under control.

A release issued by Kurtz Bros., Inc., said the fire was due to a spontaneous combustion situation with its raw wood products at the production facility on Canal Road.

“While these kinds of occurrences are not uncommon due to the nature of the materials, rarely do they accelerate to the point they did today. We would like to assure the community at large that we consider safety paramount. We are relieved to report that no injuries resulted from this event. Our protocols for such incidents were followed, and our team responded with professionalism and urgency,” the release states.
