Companies in the video games industry have begun releasing earnings reports for the latest quarter. They come as Sony and Microsoft prepare to release new game consoles in time for the holiday season, following last year's launch of Nintendo's Wii U. Here's a look at selected companies that make or sell video games or machines.

— July 18: Microsoft Corp. says it shipped 1.0 million Xbox 360 consoles in the latest quarter, compared with 1.1 million in the same period a year earlier. Microsoft plans to start selling a new console, Xbox One, by the holiday-shopping season.
