Video footage shows Sacramento deputy’s fatal shooting of man in mental health crisis

(FOX40.COM) — Video footage of a suicidal man who was armed with a knife and fatally shot by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office in March was recently released.

At around 8:15 a.m. on March 23, deputies responded to a residence on the 6500 block of Campanile Street in Rio Linda because a caller reported that her brother, later identified as 38-year-old Christopher Gilmore, had schizophrenia, was armed with a knife, and was cutting himself in a bathroom.

Upon arrival, SCSO said it was informed by a roommate that Gilmore made statements that he wanted to “die by suicide by cop.” Deputies said that shortly after their arrival, Gilmore refused their directives and advanced toward them with a knife. Despite “less lethal” shotgun rounds made with intent to disarm him, Gilmore did not stop and was fatally shot, according to SCSO.

On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office released a narrated bodycam video from the day of the incident. Click here to view it.

SCSO said an investigation of the incident is ongoing and will be conducted internally, which is its standard practice. An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
