VIDEO: Florida DUI driver hits officer with car, says he was having a bad time while crying

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Newly released body cam video showed a chaotic encounter between Florida police officers and a drunk driver last month.

On Jan. 23, 2024, officers with the Florida City Police Department were investigating a robbery when they said Giovanni Mendez-Simon, 19, crashed into a patrol car, hitting one officer and narrowly missing another.

The officer who managed to get out of the way had a body cam that recorded the aftermath.

In the video, the officer is seen calling for help on his radio before going to help the driver out of his vehicle. As the officers took him out of the vehicle, Mendez-Simon began sobbing.

After some time, officers handcuffed Mendez-Simon — who is heard on the video saying he was “pasando un mal momento,” which translates to going through “a bad moment.”

The officer, after telling Mendez-Simon that he didn’t want to hear his excuses, asked the 19-year-old if he didn’t have a license. The driver said he did not, as shown in the video.

According to the officer, Mendez-Simon had “beer cans all over the car.”

WPLG reported that Mendez-Simon told reporter Roy Ramos that it was his second time drinking and didn’t know how to hold his alcohol. The defendant also said he was remorseful and that he was glad the officer he hit was not severely hurt.
