VIDEO: Firefighters detonate Utah home with volatile dynamite

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A stash of dynamite in a Holladay home had an explosive end after the Unified Fire Authority performed a controlled detonation.

Unified Fire has now released a video of that explosion.

The video, posted on Unified Fire Authority’s social media account shows as one official presses a button activating the detonation. In the distance, the home can be seen exploding with debris flying into the air amid a ball of fire. The video then shows the some engulfed in a massive blaze.

“Due to the number of variables involved in each emergency, there is no one-size-fits-all solution,” UFA said in its post. “Our primary concern is always for the lives of the community we serve and the safety of any on-scene personnel.”

The controlled detonation was ordered after the homeowner found old dynamite while going through old belongings. The woman reportedly had no idea the dynamite was there. Crews determined the detonation would be the safest way to dispose of the volatile sticks of dynamite.

The resulting explosion could be heard for miles just before 4 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24.

“Before this controlled detonation, UFA worked closely with the homeowner to remove some of her irreplaceable belongings,” UFA said.
