VIDEO: Dolphin stranded in New Jersey creek for nearly a week, officials say

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A bottlenose dolphin has been stuck in a New Jersey creek for a week, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

On May 16, staff and volunteers were alerted of the dolphin in Middle Township, Cape May County, and have been monitoring it multiple times a day. They went out on two boats on Saturday to encourage the animal to move out, but it wouldn’t leave the immediate area.

The center said they have another rescue plan, but will not release further details about when or how, to avoid interference from unauthorized people, as approaching the dolphin may stress it out and hamper their rescue efforts.

NBC Philadelphia reported that the dolphin is believed to have ended up in the creek from the Delaware Bay while chasing food.

According to the stranding center, this is not the first dolphin report in the same section of the waterway. In August 2016, another bottlenose dolphin was found and eventually returned to the bay.
