VIDEO: Dog runs to doggy day care for help after owner gets into crash

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — After her owner got into a car crash, this dog ran a mile to a doggy day care to get help, according to the Washington Post.

On Feb. 24, Melissa Fickel, 31, was driving to a park with her 4-year-old pit bull lab mix dog, Aries, when she was rear-ended at an intersection near Detroit.

But Aries got scared and jumped out of the car window.

“I was surprised when she jumped out because she’d never done anything like that before,” Fickel told the Washington Post.

Fickel saw Aries on the side of a busy road, but the dog then took off. Fickel said she tried calling out after her dog, but couldn’t run after her. She pulled over and began looking near the buildings where she last saw Aries.

When local police arrived, Fickel said she had to shift her focus back to the crash, which caused minor damage to the car, but no injuries. Eventually, she was able to tell them she lost her dog.

The Washington Post reported that 20 minutes following the crash, the owner of Hounds Town Metro Detroit, the doggy day care that Aries has gone to once a week over the last three years, contacted Fickel that her dog had run a mile to a place that she knows and loves.

Fickel said she was emotional and knew her dog ran to a safe spot.

The video shows Aries arrive at the doggy day care and try to get the staff’s attention. The owner let the pup inside and Aries apparently ran over to him and began licking his face.

“I love that dog and knew immediately it was her,” the owner said. “She’s a really social dog who is always ready to play and have fun with the other pups.”

The owner said he was initially confused why Aries showed up without Fickel until he learned of the accident.

“Dogs are really smart and know their routes,” the owner added.

Fortunately, Aries and Fickle were reunited and are both OK following the accident.
