Victim of sexual assault near Pitt’s campus testifies in front of alleged attacker

New details of a sexual assault near Pitt’s campus were revealed in court on Tuesday.

According to a Pittsburgh police detective’s testimony, a rape kit led to the arrest of Javonne Thompson, the man accused of sexually assaulting a woman as she was walking home in Oakland.

He testified that after the attack, the victim went to the hospital, where a rape kit was performed.

The DNA had a match, and according to the detective, it matched Thompson.

According to online records, Thompson was charged with attempted homicide in 2007, and now, he’s behind bars again after Judge Xander Orenstein moved the case forward.

The victim also testified against Thompson and relived the terrifying night when she was thrown to the ground, beaten, and raped by a man wearing a mask.

She told the judge that the man was holding a several-inch-long knife, and threatened to kill her.

According to detectives, part of that attack was caught on surveillance video.

Thompson’s case will now go to trial.
