Victim in fatal Russell County shooting identified

LEBANON, Va. (WJHL) – The victim of a fatal shooting near the Walmart in Lebanon, Virginia has been identified.

According to Russell County Sheriff Bill Watson, Zachary Cody Boyd died Tuesday after the shooting.

The sheriff’s office took Dennis Gilbert, 70, into custody Tuesday afternoon following the reported shooting in the parking lot of the Walmart.

Boyd was transported to the Russell County Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Watson confirmed Tuesday night that Boyd had died as a result of his injuries.

Gilbert, of Cleveland, Virginia was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm and shooting in a public place, according to the Office of Russell County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

The commonwealth’s attorney’s office stated in a news release that Gilbert and Boyd had been involved in a verbal altercation before Gilbert allegedly fired the gun.

Gilbert was also charged by warrant with brandishing a firearm due to a previous alleged incident in Lebanon on March 3, the release stated.

As of Wednesday, Gilbert was being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Abingdon without bond. He is set to appear in court Friday.

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Lebanon Police Department and Virginia State Police are still investigating the shooting.
