UPDATE: Victim in early-morning shooting ID'd

May 19—CHAMPAIGN — A 24-year-old Rantoul man was shot and killed in an early-morning incident at a parking lot near the intersection of Mattis and Bradley avenues Sunday.

Champaign County Coroner Steve Thuney on Sunday identified the victim as Jawon Brown, who was pronounced dead at 2:54 a.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital.

An autopsy is scheduled for next week.

Responding to a report of shots fired and injuries at 1:54 a.m. in the 1100 block of North Mattis Avenue, police found evidence of a shooting but no witnesses to what happened. Two victims were taken to a hospital, including a 28-year-old from Rantoul. The 24-year-old man, who was shot in the torso, died. The other man was also shot and remains in stable condition.

Police said people were in the parking lot of a business when the shooting began. All involved parties fled the area.
