Vicky McClure’s new thriller series Insomnia has released a creepy first trailer for the show.

The Line of Duty actor stars in the upcoming drama for Paramount+, which is coming to the streaming platform on May 23.

In the adaptation of Sarah Pinborough’s novel, McClure plays a woman called Emma Averill, who has a seemingly perfect life and career that begins to unravel as she reckons with her difficult past.

Now a new trailer has been released for the six-part series, which gives an idea of the tense action that will unfold in the show.

The show’s synopsis reads: "A couple of weeks before her fortieth birthday, Emma stops sleeping – just as her mother had done right before she suffered a violent psychotic breakdown on the night of her own fortieth birthday.

"Emma’s mother always told her she’d go the same way, that she had the same ‘bad blood’ and now Emma’s terrified it’s true."

The new clip shows Emma’s anxiety about her mother’s prophecy and the past repeating itself, as she asks whether insomnia can run in families.

There are also hints about the trauma from Emma’s childhood, with her sister Phoebe, played by Line of Duty co-star Leanne Best, telling her: "Your husband doesn’t know what happened to us when we were kids. That isn’t healthy.'

In the scary trailer, Emma is seen struggling at work, obsessively writing numbers on a wall, and even waking up to find herself standing in the middle of a lake.

"There is only one monster in this house," she tells her son who himself is struggling to sleep, "and do you know who it is? It’s me!"

Alongside McClure and Best, Insomnia also stars Downton Abbey’s Tom Cullen as Emma’s husband Robert and Corinna Marlowe as her mother, with Inside Man’s Lyndsey Marshal and Unforgotten’s Michelle Bonnard also involved.

Insomnia will premiere on May 23, streaming on Paramount+ in the UK.
