A pit bull grabbed its owner by the jugular and mauled him to death inside a Bronx apartment building early Friday — before responding cops gunned down the vicious dog, authorities said.

Cops responded just after 3 a.m. to a 911 call for a dog biting its owner, 41-year-old Kaheem Robinson, inside the building on Simpson Street near Home Street in Longwood, police said.

The dog had latched onto the man’s jugular, and he was gushing blood, sources said.

Two officers opened fire, striking the dog multiple times, cops said.

A friend of the victim feared the dog, whose name was either Mic or Max, even though it appeared calm, he said.

“I told him that dog was no good. It’s a pit bull, they go berserk,” said the neighbor who declined to give his name. “The dog wasn’t vicious at all, I played with the dog myself. I put my hands in the dog’s mouth. We would just play around. It could have been me. With any dog, they could turn any minute.”

He said the victim was having trouble affording food and was giving some of what little he had to the dog.

“He was barely feeding himself, so when he made meals he got to feed the dog too,” he said.  “He would go up to these [food pantries] he would get stuff for him. They would also give out dog food. He would get a 6 pound bag every couple of days.”

He couldn’t believe his pal lost his life so suddenly.

“I was just with him last night. We smoked some seed, we chilled,” he said. “Everything was cool. He was cooking. Salmon cakes. It sucks. Here one day, next day you’re gone.”

The owner — whose name has not been released pending family notification — was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, but could not be saved, police said.

The pit bull was pronounced dead at the scene, cops said.

Both officers were taken to a local hospital, where they were evaluated for ringing in their ears.
