Some veterans say not to thank them on Memorial Day

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF)- Memorial Day is the unofficial start to the summer. It’s the day we remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

But each year many veterans take to social media asking people not to thank them for their service. And not everyone agrees on the proper greeting for Memorial Day.

Most people say “Happy Memorial Day” or they will take to social media to thank veterans for their service.

But many veterans say this makes them uncomfortable because it’s not about them. For some, the freedom to celebrate holidays is why they risked their lives. For others, it’s a very personal day, to remember those who died for freedom.

Kenneth Meyer is a Vietnam veteran living in Harlem. He’s ok with the celebrations as long as people remember the meaning of the day.

“There are people out there that are serving now that are giving up a piece of their lives to serve this country. There are people that have given up their life itself. Think about the reflection of the family of that person that lost someone,” he said.

Many veterans believe Memorial Day should be a somber day remembering those who didn’t make it home. All believe everyone should take a moment to reflect on everyone who served, either as a service member or a family member.

Meyer got emotional when he explained that the hostility that greeted he and his fellow soldiers when they came home from the Vietnam War, makes him really appreciate the support he gets as a veteran now.

“There’s two things that I hear often. One is ‘Thank you for your service,’ which I appreciate and appreciate very much. But then there are those that also came back from Vietnam, and we will almost always say, ‘Welcome home, brother,'” said Meyer with tears in his eyes. “That means even more.”
