Veteran officer killed in casino fight

BATAVIA, New York (WJW) –  Investigators have arrested two people in connection with the death of a veteran sheriff’s deputy in New York.

Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello was killed on March 10 while working a special assignment at Batavia Downs Gaming and Hotel.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, Sanfratello was escorting two people out of the casino, at the request of the security staff.

The sheriff’s office says Michael Elmore, 33, and Lyndsey Wilcox, 39, had a verbal confrontation with officers initially and left the casino but returned shortly after.

The two became physically combative, according to a press release.

Sergeant Sanfratello was able to get Wilcox in handcuffs. Investigators say that’s when Elmore attacked the sergeant.

According to the sheriff’s office, Sanfratello deployed a taser during the attack, but Elmore continued to attack him.

At some point during the incident, Sanfratello became unresponsive, a press release states.

He was pronounced dead at the coroner’s office.

Sanfratello was 54 years old. He was a 32-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.

According to his obituary, he leaves behind 3 children.

His funeral will be held on Saturday.
