Town of Veteran man arrested on meth charges after explosion investigation

VETERAN, N.Y. (WETM) – A man from the Town of Veteran has been arrested on meth charges after an investigation into an explosion that occurred on Veteran Hill Road back in March.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Bryon J. Schwartz, 42, was arrested on Wednesday, May 22, on an outstanding superior court warrant. He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the second degree, a class A-II felony, and unlawful manufacture of meth in the third degree, a class D felony.

Schwartz’s charges stem from an incident that occurred on March 9 in the Town of Veteran when members of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, along with town and county fire departments, were called to a reported explosion.

The investigation was then turned over to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division where a search warrant was then obtained and completed with assistance from the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team.

During the search, officials found an active meth lab along with 6.3 ounces of meth.

Following the investigation, the superior court warrant was issued and Schwartz was arrested on the above listed charges. He is now being held in the Chemung County Jail awaiting a further court appearance.
