Verizon plans to use LTE for new video broadcast network

When Verizon (VZ) CEO Lowell McAdam said this week that his company was looking at other ways to make money besides smartphones, he wasn’t lying. Verizon announced from CES that it’s working on a new service called “LTE Broadcast” that “could allow students on satellite campuses to see a lecture from a star professor” or allow sports leagues to “provide additional or exclusive content to their fans who attend live events, enriching their experience at the venue.” Verizon says that LTE Broadcast is based on “evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) standards approved by 3GPP” that allow “for a very efficient use of LTE spectrum and network.” The carrier isn’t providing any information about when this new broadcast service will be available and so far is only providing demonstrations of the technology at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.
