Venezuela marks independence day with military parade

Venezuela is wracked by political divisions. The opposition labels Maduro a dictator who rigged his 2018 re-election and has clung to power by persecuting rivals.

Maduro has lambasted international pressure on his government and tough sanctions as part of a coup against him.

The United States, the European Union and Canada have reported they would be willing to review sanctions if any negotiations led to transparent elections.
