Vendor testing fireworks tonight from new location ahead of the Fourth

Apr. 25—The vendor for Albert Lea's Fourth of July fireworks will light off a series of fireworks tonight from the new planned location for this year's display to test visibility throughout the community.

Organizers of the fireworks earlier this month said they plan to move the annual display from the city beach to a new location this year on city property west of the Blazing Star Landing between Fountain and Albert Lea lakes.

Shari Sprague, executive director of the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce, which fundraises for the fireworks, said there will be volunteers gathering photos and video from at least 15 locations to advise residents where the best locations will be to watch the display on the Fourth.

She said 10 to 15 fireworks are estimated to be shot into the air between 8:45 and 9 p.m.

The move in the fireworks location is taking place to allow the display to be in compliance with state code.

Organizers said they believe spectators will be able to use both lakes to view the event by boat or sit on sidewalks or in surrounding parks to watch.

Anyone else interested in watching the fireworks tonight is welcome to do so and is encouraged to do so from a safe location, the chamber said in an email to members.

Check the Tribune on Friday for more information about the results of the testing.
