'Velocity of Autumn' with Estelle Parsons to close

NEW YORK (AP) — The first casualty of the Tony Award nominations has fallen: The play "Velocity of Autumn" will close.

Producers said Tuesday that Eric Coble's play starring Estelle Parsons and Stephen Spinella will shut its doors Sunday, having played 22 preview and 16 regular performances at the Booth Theatre.

The announcement came just hours after Parsons was given a Tony nomination, but the play didn't earn any others. "Velocity of Autumn," which is hemorrhaging cash, needed several nods to stay open.

The play is about an elderly woman who has barricaded herself inside her Brooklyn brownstone, while two of her children threaten to either put her into a nursing home or call the police. A third child intervenes.

The play was a hit at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., this year.
