“We’ve got to make crimes criminal again”: Speaker Mike Johnson at House GOP “Police Week” presser.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said “we’ve got to make crimes criminal again,” an apparent play on Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, at a House Republican Conference “Police Week” press conference.

“An FBI report just yesterday has reported that the rate of assaults on law enforcement officers in America is at a 10-year high. We have got to reverse that. As the sheriff said earlier, we've got to make crimes criminal again,” Johnson said at the Wednesday morning event.

“I mean, it’s just common sense,” the Speaker continued. “And I think everybody in the country who looks at this objectively understands it — anybody who’s not involved in the radical, woke, progressive left understands clearly that you’ve got to maintain the peace.”

Johnson has previously defended the January 6 rioters who stormed the Capitol and assaulted members of law enforcement.

The Speaker joined the Wednesday press conference in Washington, D.C., after he returned from a trip to Manhattan a day prior where he attended Trump’s criminal trial, and gave a press conference defending the former president. Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York as part of a hush money scheme to bury stories of alleged extramarital affairs that he feared could hurt his presidential campaign in 2016.
