VDOT warns Virginians of fake text messages on unpaid tolls spreading state-to-state

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) are encouraging the public to be on alert for fake text messages about unpaid tolls.

The text messages, also known as smishing, are requesting people to send a payment for outstanding toll charges.

The FBI says since the beginning of March, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center has received over 2,000 complaints about smishing texts regarding road toll collection services from at least three states. Information from the complaints indicates the scam may be moving from state to state.

VSP warns of fraudulent calls impersonating law enforcement requesting ‘eGift’ payments

According to investigators, the text includes a link to impersonate a toll facility’s or collection service’s name, and phone numbers appear to change between states. By clicking the link, users can risk giving away sensitive data, including credit card information.

However, VDOT confirmed that it is not aware of any Virginia residents receiving the fraudulent messages.

The department says those who receive unsolicited text messages that claim it’s from E-ZPass or a specific toll facility in Virginia, should not click the link. Instead, contact E-ZPass or visit the specific toll facility to verify the balance.

The FBI advises users to do the following if they receive the text:

  • File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, be sure to include:

    1. The phone number from where the text originated.

    2. The website listed within the text

  • Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.

  • Contact the toll service’s customer service phone number.

  • Delete any smishing texts received.

  • If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
