The VCR is about to disappear forever

Once upon a time, long before Netflix and DVRs, if you wanted to watch a movie or record something on TV you needed a video cassette recorder. Back in the ‘90s, the VCR (and VHS players) were a household staple. We used them to watch our Disney movies and record episodes of Saved By the Bell and Power Rangers. And then, if we wanted to watch them again, we had to press a button and wait for them to rewind all the way to the beginning.

But it’s time to say a final goodbye to the technology.

40 years after VHS video cassette recorders were introduced, the last known manufacturer is stopping production.

RIP our childhoods.

Funai Electric, an electronics company in Japan, will officially stop making VCRs at the end of this month after over 30 years in the business. There once was a time when Funai Electric sold 15 million VCRs a year, but that number has dropped drastically.

Last year, they sold only 750,000 VCRs.

To be honest, we didn’t even know there was still anyone making a VCR. With streaming services like Netflix and HBO Go, and superior movie formats like DVD and Blu-ray, we thought the technology would have folded a long time ago. It’s sad to think of it out there, plugging away, not seeing that the world has moved on from the VCR.

Still, it’s sad to officially say goodbye to one of our childhood staples. If there’s a lesson to be learned from all of this, it’s simple: Be kind. Rewind!
