Vanity Heaven: Smart Make-Up Storage Hacks

My makeup collection is a thing of wonder, but finding the best way to store it took a lot of wondering.

Having an organized and stylish vanity area is every girl’s dream. But unfortunately, all good intentions of keeping the hundreds of beauty products I own arranged in a concise and harmonious manner goes completely out the window as soon as I have to use something.

Like a house of cards, once I remove one eyeliner, the entire system comes crashing to the ground, leaving my bedroom looking like there has been a make up explosion.

So in order to help myself, and anyone else in the same predicament, i went looking for the savviest and smartest ways to store and display my precious products, without breaking the bank. Here are my favorites:

1. Perfume Spice Rack

Spice racks come in all shapes and sizes and are perfect for displaying your pretty fragrance bottles. Target has lots of different options, from a rotating carousel to some pretty metal wall-mounted frames that can be easily installed. This one below is from The Container Store and costs less than $20.

2. Make Up Magnet Board

Tired of rifling thought drawers or boxes of make up? This genius idea using magnetic boards not only displays your make up with easy access, but also allows you to organize it really easily too. It is a huge space saver, leaving your drawers and surfaces product free, and if you are super fancy you could even frame the boards for a more decorative look. Magnetic boards are available from The Container Store and you can buy one hundred super strong, self-adhesive magnetic dots from Staples for just $24.

3. Wine Rack with Glasses

A stellar way to store all your lip liners, eye liners and eye brow pencils in an orderly fashion. Even with the current craze of the over-penciled lip, I think an entire 12-bottled wine rack might be a little much. But this 3-bottle, free standing rack from Bed Bath & Beyond (below), would save space on your vanity and is a steal at $12. Just slot in three matching glasses (or plastic cups if that’s your aesthetic) and away you go.

4. Vintage Straw Holder

I love the idea of repurposing kitchen utensils for use in other areas of the home. Especially when they are vintage. And an old style straw dispenser, like one you would see on a diner counter, is perfect for storing your make up brushes. They can be bought new from many kitchen stores or Bed, Bath & Beyond but if you are willing to go digging around your local flea market and thrift shop, you might be able to find a nice vintage one.

5. Cake Stand

Nail polish is a major obsession for me and my collection is offensively large. Finding a neat and tidy way of storing nail polish on a vanity without taking up too much space is hard, but this multi layered cake stand, like with the spice rack, is a stylish and smart option. Again, you could buy a new cake stand from pretty much anywhere, or go hunting for a vintage one. Cake stands are also made in many different materials (glass, metal, wood) and have various layer options depending on how much you need to store. So if you are like me you can go for the five tier wedding cake-sized option.

6. Mini Loaf Tins

I recently discovered these for making mini versions of my fave pumpkin spiced loaf, but they have an awesome other use: storing all your beauty necessities. Slot a row of them in a drawer or on display, then fill them with all your bits n’ bobs. I use mine for cotton balls, q-tips and make up sponges. You could even leave one empty to use as a mini vanity trash can. Perfect for used wipes and sponges. Vintage tins, like the ones below are available on Etsy. Or you can buy new ones from any kitchen supply store.
