UWF gifted $150,000 to establish the Elizabeth S. Calhoun Endowment for Industrial Careers

A $150,000 gift to the University of West Florida established the Elizabeth S. Calhoun Endowment for Industrial Careers and named the Elizabeth S. Calhoun Analytical Lab, which will benefit undergraduate chemistry majors in UWF’s Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. The endowment will focus on supporting women and Pell-eligible students.

Recognized as the first female graduate from the chemistry department at UWF, Calhoun had a successful more than 35-year career in the chemistry industry. She worked for Celanese, a global chemical and fibers company, in many different capacities including technical development, technical sales and marketing, quality management and environmental, health and safety.

Prior to retirement, the last position she held was international director of environmental health and safety for Celanese Acetate, where she was responsible for providing the business with effective and efficient environmental health, safety, product stewardship and toxicology programs and services worldwide, which promote regulatory compliance and fosters responsible risk management.

Visit Pensacola event marketing mini grants available up to $5,000

Visit Pensacola’s event marketing mini grants are available for 2024. Annually, Visit Pensacola allocates funds from its budget to a grant program for local groups and organizations that coordinate events with a demonstrated history of visitor impact or the significant potential to draw visitors to the area.

The maximum mini-grant request is $5,000. Mini-grant dollars are to be used 100 percent on the marketing of events creating awareness and bringing visitors from outside of Escambia County.  Visit Pensacola additionally provides free marketing support through the calendar of events on its website. Events in Escambia County are encouraged to upload information to visitpensacola.com/events/submit-your-event/.

Volunteer sought for the Disability Awareness Committee

The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners is seeking county residents interested in volunteering for an appointment to the Escambia County Disability Awareness Committee, established by the board during its regular meeting on Oct. 17, 2013.

Escambia County residents interested in serving on the committee are asked to submit a resume and letter indicating their desire to serve by the close of business Monday, May 13. Letters and resumes should be emailed to boardapply@myescambia.com or mailed to: Jose Gochez, Program Manager, Escambia County Board of County Commissioners, 221 Palafox Place, Pensacola, FL 32502.The purpose of the committee is to make recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners regarding issues relating to the disabled community and any other issues requested by the board. The committee is composed of seven voting members, and all members of the committee must be electors of Escambia County.

Each commissioner on the Board of County Commissioners appoints one member to the committee, and each member serves concurrently with his or her appointing commissioner’s term. The board collectively appoints two at-large members, who each serve a four-year term.
