UW-Superior prepares for commencement

May 9—SUPERIOR — The University of Wisconsin-Superior will conduct its commencement May 18 at 2 p.m. at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.

Chancellor Renée Wachter will preside over the ceremony and present diplomas to students who have earned associate, bachelor's and master's degrees.

Delivering the keynote address will be Diana Chi, a 1974 graduate who held many positions in the media, including time at KBJR-TV in Duluth. Chi made her mark at KTLA-TV in Los Angeles from 1986-2019. Through those 33 years, she was honored with three Emmys, five Golden Mikes and three Mark Twain Associated Press awards for Best Writing.

The student speaker will be Hewan Haileselassie, an international student from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, majoring in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

As a dedicated member of the Black Student Union, School of Business and Economics Event Planning Committee, UWS Changemakers and Intercultural Programming Council, Haileselassie has played a pivotal role in nurturing a strong sense of community and promoting cultural diversity at UW-Superior. Haileselassie has also worked as an administrative assistant in the Human Resources Office and as a building manager at the Yellowjacket Union.

Through her active involvement in these organizations, Haileselassie has contributed to creating inclusive spaces, organizing impactful events, and advocating for social justice on both local and global scales.

The Chancellor's Leadership Award will be presented to Hayk Arzumanyan, Evaline Britton, Haley Stalls and Kaitlyn Stender. This award is given to members of the graduating class who are committed to personal growth and who have made a positive contribution to their peers, campus and community.

Northwood Technical College commencement will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Superior Middle School, followed immediately by a reception. There are 147 students graduating from the Superior campus.

The speaker will be Superior campus student ambassador Jeff Philipsek. The emcee for the night will be Aliesha Crowe, vice president of academic affairs.
