UTEP men dominate Liberty 67-51, complete road trip sweep

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (KTSM) – The UTEP men’s basketball team played its way to a 67-51 win over Liberty at Liberty Arena on Saturday. With the win over Liberty, UTEP completed the road trip sweep, going 2-0 on the week in its last road swing of the regular season.

UTEP junior guard Corey Camper Jr. recorded a season-high 21 points, leading the Miners in the scoring category in its contest against Liberty. Senior guard Zid Powell tallied up 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Tae Hardy pitched in 12 points and Otis Frazier III contributed 11 points in the Miners’ win.

UTEP shot 52.8% from the floor, knocking down 28-of-53 shots. This is the second straight game UTEP has shot over 50% from the field. UTEP shot 40% from three, making six three-pointers on 15 total attempts. This is the first game UTEP shot better than 40% from three since the Miners beat New Mexico State 74-49 at the Don Haskins Center on Feb. 10.

Liberty only had two players finish the contest in double figures in scoring. Kaden Metheny led the Flames with 15 points. Kyle Rode scored 13 points. As a team, Liberty shot 39% from the floor and 28% from three-point land.

UTEP improved to 14-15 overall and 5-9 in Conference USA play. UTEP jumped from eighth to sixth place in the league standings. Right now, UTEP is currently in a spot where it is out of the CUSA Tournament play-in game. Miners will come back to El Paso on a two-game winning streak and take on Florida International in its regular season finale on Thursday, Mar. 7 at the Don Haskins Center.
